Ornamental Fresh Water Fishes
Ornamental fish rearing today is catching up everywhere as an interesting pass-time. There are aquariums everywhere today. Many offices, public places, homes, hostels etch have a neat niche set apart for this purpose.
A glance into the origin of the word aquarium is rewarding. The word ‘aquarium’ is a Latin coinage where ‘aqua’ means water and ‘rium’ means a place. The resulting word meant storage of water. When people started fish keeping as a hobby they used this Latin loan word. Today, the word is used as habitat for ornamental fish keeping in many languages.
The popular vogue of the pass-time has created a great demand for tailor-made aquariums and many companies have come up with very many different types of these products. Their number, size and specification are too many and it is not worth the trouble listing these.
The fresh water fish lover has a range of aquariums to choose from, some of them simple enough made of a transparent vessel. Others are a little complicated with high-tech gadgets to freshen the water with continuous aeration. To increase visibility there are also wonderful lighting ideas. However, to choose the right products, freshwater aquarium information is useful.
Evolution
of the Aquarium
The idea of an aquarium as a private pass-time is somewhat recent. It started somewhere in the middle of 19th century. The Sumerians had a functional aquarium in which they kept edible fish. It was for the convenience of ensuring a steady supply for the domestic table.

When we glance through Egyptian history, it is interesting to note that they embellished their temple precincts with huge rectangular tanks where they kept different variety of fish. To the modern man and woman who look at places of worship as purely for prayer, this fish keeping in Egyptian temples might sound a bit strange.
When we come to our times initially aquariums were in public place similar to zoos. However, eventually with the support of technology successful home rearing became more practical. So after the First World War fish keeping became a popular hobby. Over the years the enthusiasm for this has only grown.
So, when we consider the evolution of modern aquarium it started as a practical devise for satisfying our gastronomic delight by steady supply of fish for the table. Today there are a wide range of choices in aquariums and artifacts related to fish keeping. In this medley of products people should be able to make sense. In this context freshwater aquarium information is very relevant indeed.
